You'll like that "tube" method until a you've got that in your ear and a
carb backfires on you.  I also think it's way to loud when syncing the carbs
at speed.  If you didn't already know, the adjustment must be made at idle
and at 2500-3000 rpm.  The idle adjustment is made on the carbs, the "at
speed" adjustment on the linkage.
The Unisyn works great, you just have to take a reading quickly in order to
prevent the mixture from becoming rich due to the disruption of air flow at
the front of the  carb.

Take a length of 3/8 " hose a couple of feet long and put one end in the
carb
throat about 1/2" in, the other end against your ear.
You can hear the difference in the carbs if they are the slightest bit off.
