Yes, by side to side I'm talking about the shaft sliding in and out. How
much play between the shaft and the bushing is too much?

If so, that shouldn't be a problem. That just means that there is
clearance between the bore of the throat and the butterfly. That
shouldn;t cause any problems because the airflow around the butterfly will
be part of the airflow that is required for idle. The place that the air
leaks that re-bushing the carb are located is when the shaft does not fit
the bushes tightly, allowing air to enter the carb around the shaft. I
wouldn't have any problem with .001" clearance around the shaft. Make sure
that when you measure this clearance that the butterfly is open so you
don't have binding between the butterfly and the throat interfering with
the measurement.
