Henry, check the Kastner book again. The early heads (TR-2 & very early
TR-3 - think they were changed at about chassis number 9000) were 'LOW port
heads'. I know this because I have one on my TR-2. It uses a different
intake manifold, and the intake ports are noticeably lower in the head than
the 'high port heads'. The most noticeable difference between the two
heads is that on the high port heads, the head stud bosses stand up above
the main top surface of the head by about 1/2" for the studs which are next
to the manifolds. On the low port heads, these bosses are about even with
the top surface of the head.

If you have a high port head, you should be OK with the milling you
propose. As Kas also says, the best heads for racing are the later TR-4A
'small port heads'. This head has an intake port which measures about 1
1/2" in diameter (stock dimension), verses the earlier heads which has
intake ports measuring approximatelry 1 5/8" in diameter.

Hope this helps..... Good luck.

Greetings,

I took another look at the head I was planning to bring to the machine shop
this week to get milled and I realized it is an early high port head. The
head that Kas and others have warned us about the need to be careful when
milling because of cutting into the water jacket.

Anyone know if I am going to get .125 off this head without problems? Is
there a way of determining how much can come off safely?

When I got this head it was completely redone, new guides, stellite seats,
new valves... I'm hoping I don't end up keeping this head for my street
TR3B!

On a related note, does anyone have any of the copper figure 8 gaskets they
would be willing to sell? My liners are coming up a solid .002 with the
thinner steel gaskets. The copper ones are .018, and would do the trick
nicely.

Thanks again. Savannah is going to happen!
