I originally drove my BT7 side shift for several years with a chrome-plated
steel shift knob, and heat was no problem.

  Perhaps the Volvo or Triumph plastic knob with the switch built in would
  work.
  If you wanted to loose the chrome stick look entirely, you could slip some
  black shrink sleeve over the wire and stick and then shrink it.
  I always wondered about the heat of an aluminium knob. I guess you might
  need to wear driving gloves.
