I've got a 3:54 in my Tricarb. (Also a 28% overdrive, the opportunity for
which arouse when I turned my 22% into shrapnel, but that's another story).
I like the 3:54 very much. I find 4th gear without OD to be just fine for
our little, twisty Devon lanes and 4th with OD to be perfect for the open
road.
My 3:54 came out of an Austin Westminster automatic. Quite hard to find
nowadays (in UK anyhow) as apparently they were a great favourite of the
Banger Racing types, so they mostly got destroyed in action. (I'd guess that
a Westie could hold its own with most of its British contemporaries when it
came to the odd collision/sideswipe etc).
I thought 4:10 was the stump pulling ratio as used in London black cabs?
Simon.

James, Bill, Dave,

Ditto here. I've got a used original 3.55 "pumpkin" already set up, in
really
good shape, which I've been lugging around for years. Guess it is time to
pop
it in, now that my tricarb is back on the road.

Actually I was going to go the "other" way, as I also have a brand-new in
the
greasepaper 4.10 gearset, which I was going to install for a bit more dig.
But, the 3.55 probably makes a lot more sense, with gasoline here in (level)

Northern CA at $2.89 a gallon.
