In the really old days you had to make three runs to get a record. First you
had to exceed the existing record. That qualified you for record runs the
following morning. First you made a down run and within a hour after the
last  down run you had to make a return run. Your time was the average
of the two record runs, the qualifying pass didn't count. Definitely more
difficult, but with the number of entry's nowadays there isn't enough time
to
have two way runs in the morning and still have enough time left for
more qualifying in what remains of the day.
