Has anyone ever been able to remove the large nut securing the pinion shaft
on an early B differential?
I tried my usual last-resort impact wrench (clobbering the handle of a 1/2"
breaker-bar with a length of 2x4 lumber) and succeeded only in turning the
rear wheels a little - with the hand brake fully engaged (I resisted the
strong urge to stick a long pipe through the spokes of both wheels to lock
them).
Admittedly, it was hard to get a good swing with the axle on the car and
the car up on jack stands. The only other thing I can think of doing is
removing the axle (thereby enlarging the batter's box substantially) and
locking the brakes with the adjusting nut. Any better suggestions out
there?
