Ernest,

You say the engine is out of a 1978?  Did you have the stock single ZS carb 
and catalytic converter on it?  If the ZS choke sticks open (a very common 
problem), or it is running too rich (also common), the converter will glow 
red hot when the engine is running, and will remain hot after the engine is 
turned off, heating the engine block and cooking the oil onto the camshaft.  
So every start is a "dry start" and causing wear to the cam shaft.
