My J.C. Whitney compression tester has the switch built into it.  You
can also buy those things as a separate tool.

The switch is connected to the battery's hot (usually positive) terminal
and the starter solenoid's small power input terminal.  Don't connect to
the heavy starter terminal.

Don't turn the ignition key on as the engine will then start as the
power to the ignition is on.  Remember the ignition switch has two
positions plus an accessory position:

position one: ignition on
position two: ignition on and starter solenoid or relay on.

Release the key and the switch returns to position one.
