I'll second Stephen's motion - don't rule out I-6's. I tow our autocrosser
with my glorified family wagon - a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee - that has the
old Jeep 4.0 I-6 (roughly 200 hp and 200 ft lbs.). There are times when
headed up a long steep grade when the truck won't pull above 55, but the
overall performance is plenty adequate anywhere else. My brother has the
same Jeep with the V-8, and aside from being smoother, it has no important
noticeable day to day advantage, IMHO. I suppose that if we were towing
cross-country or all the time I'd rather have the extra torque of the V-8.
I don't think I'd tow any heavy trailer without its own brakes, BTW.

As a side note, I hauled a cord of wood home this weekend and out of
curiosity I ran it past the county scales; it weighed about the same as the
B-GT. But the cord of wood didn't attract nearly as many thumbs up from
other motorists....well, none actually.
