Although taxes are a main reason for price differences, I think Max is
correct. Here in Billings, Montana, I can see one of the three local
refineries from my office window. Our gas prices just dropped to
$1.55/gallon a few days ago after running $1.65 for the past several
months. Our gas prices typically are ten to twenty cents higher than most
other Montana/Wyoming cities. And we are the ones with the
refineries! This of course has been very controversial here in Billings,
particularly since gas prices are almost always exactly the same at all
local gas stations and rise/decrease in unison. The gas companies say the
reason for our dilemma is "market conditions" meaning they can charge us
more and we will pay.
