Jay, the owners manual lists capacities. I would suggest that capacities,
and the volume to add after an oil change, are two different things.
When an engine is freshly built a portion of the oil added is allocated to
various galleys, hoses, and components within the engine. An example of
this is the oil pump, oil cooler, etc. When you drain the oil from your
engine for an oil change you are not draining all the oil from all these
components.
So when you add oil after an oil change, and are add the manufactures stated
'capacity' you are overfilling the engine.
Assuming you have the proper dipstick, oil should be added until it reaches
the max line. The first time you do this you should watch the dipstick
carefully, and wait long enough for the oil to reach the pan. This could
take as much as 5-10 minutes. Record how much oil it took to fill the
engine, so in the future you can add the same amount.
