My solution to black box failure is to carry a set of points/condenser/rotor
from the old setup or an old point type distributor as a spare.

I run the Mallory dual point distributor on my MGB and it has worked great.
The points last much longer than with the Lucas setup. I don't really
understand why unless it is just because their are now two points that both
have to burn out before misfiring occurs.

I have a Mallory electronic ignition setup that I intend to install in the
Morgan. I had originally put this in the MGB, but it screwed up my
electronic tach. This tach reads an average of the current pulses and
requires the full current that would be seen through the points. The
electronic setups reduced this level of current so the tach reads way low.
This will not be a problem in the Morgan since the tach is cable drive.

In the past I have also used the very simple electronic ignitions that still
use the points. These reduced the current through the points to very low
levels so the points last forever. It was also very simple to convert back
in case of black box failure, just change the connection on a couple of
wires. The problems with this setup is that it doesn't boost your overall
output (spark at the plug) and no one seems to make them anymore with the
demise of points in newer automobiles. I used to buy them from J.C. Whitney,
but they don't list them in their catalog anymore.
