Haven't been following this thread too closely, but thought I would chime in
here with a 2-line story.

I once saw a fist-fight get started because a yank called a fellow from
Glasgow a "limey". He didn't like it at all for some reason.

When I lived in England, we used to refer to the locals as blokes. My
landlady always called us Yanks. She told us the story about one tenant she
had that she called a Yank, and he got quite upset, telling her that he
wasn't a Yank rather he was a rebel as he was a southerner.
