Ha! The '78 I have still has the "lump on the side" distributor. But yes,
they have a reputation for dying by the time they get to 70k miles, so in
about a week, I'm sure I'll be replacing it as well. The A-series dizzies
fit, but only the "lump" models use vacuum retard instead of vacuum advance.
(Here I go again, sounding like a know-it-all, when this is an assumption
based on my limited observations, anyway, I digress). I have a genuine
Lucas Electronic Ignition conversion kit I found at a swap meet years back
that I will probably wind up using if this one dies before I get the car
sold. I also have a spare "lump" of unknown condition. I will test it
when I get the '78 back from the shop, if it's good, I'll let you know.
