The plastic tubes/fittings are vent and probably not the source of your
vapor smell. Personally I doubt it would matter if you plugged them or
removed them altogether if your not using an original type fuel pump.
The most likely cause of your fumes problem is the air fuel separator
located in behind the bracing on the right side of your trunk/boot. This
is a common problem as the line deteriate or someone alters things. The
separator should be connected to the fuel tank on one end and to a
fitting through the boot floor on the other. both hoses are made of the
same braided steel covered hose as the fuel lines but with crimped
fitting on either end. these are most likely the problem after 30 years
of weather and abuse. the fitting through the floor connects to a steel
line going to the charcoal cannister in the engine compartment that
should be connected to the engine valve cover. The 2 hoses at the engine
side of the carbs tee together and connect to a can on the front of the
timing chain cover. this creates a vacuum in the engine to draw off
emission gases and vapors. check all fittings for age cracking or
tampering.
