The years were 1971 through 1975. I don't remember what model year my VW
camper was, but it was "new style." Sold my 67 XKE Jag and went hippie.
Talk about a step down. That was the worst driving car I ever had. No engine
to get you up the hill and no brakes to stop you on the way down. Really good
in the crosswinds, I might add. I got real good at replacing the engine,
every 2 years or 50,000 miles, whichever came first. No sense changing the
oil at that rate.
But I had some great times in that thing (and for you dirty old men, not what
I meant). Camping, cross country road trips, parked for some extended times
at the base of some very posh ski areas. They really loved that at Vail.
Very comfortable to drive. Hands rest on the steering wheel, foot resting on
the floor on top of the accelerator pedal.
Hit a deer head on going 65. Deer went under the bus, but I suddenly had 6
inches less leg room.
Once actually hauled six people, and a friend's 16 foot Hobie Cat to the
Jersey shore. Made a lot of friends on the Garden State Parkway that day. At
least I think that's why they were waving and honking their horns.
Crazy thing is, if my wife would agree, I would buy one in a minute, retire,
let my hair grow out, and start all over again.

PS what is the problem with driving a Volvo Station Wagon, anyway? Suck the
doors off any of those Soccer Mom pieces of crap.
