My original reply wasn't to you.  From what you describe, I think your
hooking the "keyed hot" wire someplace without enough juice.  Use your
tester to find which fuse in the box is only hot with the key on and run the
wire to it. There is no problem hooking both wires to the same hot wire it
will work fine unless it is a keyed hot in which case you would loose your
radio memory all the time.
