I replaced a lay shaft in my 69 as well, I had the haynes manual and some
molegrips and hammer and had no problems :)hehe....

Seriously, It wasn't a big deal.  I just made sure I had plenty of work
room and some pie pans to hold small parts.  I also had the factory manual
which shows the locations of the balls and springs.  One thing I did do
that helped me was to remove a ball/spring and put it in a baggie and
label where it went.  I'm no mechanic by any means, but if you feel
comfortable working on your motor, have the time and space and a good book
I think a guy could do it.
