John,
You would know that you had knocked it off-center because the brake warning
light on the dash would stay on (assuming it still works). "Too robustly"
would therefore means that the light came on in the process of bleeding the
brakes (vicious circle).
The Haynes manual has a sequence listed for what order to bleed the brakes
in order to maintain the centering (or to restore the centering if the light
is on). It is out of reach just now, but it is documented in the brake
bleeding section. It worked on my 74.
