Thanks to everyone for your help and information. Back in June I
contacted two outfits who specialize in recovery of wire recordings.
Each looked at the state of the rust on the spool and shook their
head. Too far gone. I will try the Smithsonian as several of you
suggested but my hopes are not high.

Buster - RE: oral histories. The ones I am trying to make sense
of are, unfortunately, the writings of several people with personal
agendas or (as you mentioned) historians in it for self aggrandisement.
In the case of Wyatt S. Earp, I am sadly afraid that there are so
many untruths which have been expanded to mythic proportions
that the honest truth may never be discovered. Hollywood and
Earp's own ego have all but obliterated the reality. Lazy historians
have further complicated things as they embellish the few
incontrovertible facts to financial gain in the form of book sales.
About the only one I have any regard for these days is Casey
Teferteller who has simply presented the facts in order to let
the reader judge. More historians should do this instead of
injecting their personal biases into their work.

Thanks again everyone... This is one very special group of
people!

Cheers!!
