Did you drive it with the heater on?  If that reduces the overheating, there
may be a clogged bypass hose.  Allowing the coolant to travel thru the
heater would bypass the bypass hose...maybe...

Or it could be a defective electric fan thermostat...but only if it has an
electric fan.
