right. How else could they have moved the door slightly to fit? Well

There are lots of other ways. They could get "thinner hinges" and then shim
them.
Based on the description, I wouldn't rule our a sagging body. Does the car
have some rust? If so, it's possible only one side is sagging. Check out
the sills. Was there ever any accident damage? That could screw up the
geometry.
I'm not sure how bending hinges would give you the room you need.
