Well, anyone who was awake at the time knows about the JC Whitney
bankruptcy -- it was ALL over the news and Johnny Carson, for instance,
made much of it. Their major creditor, oddly enough, was their printer.
In those days, Whitney had a huge mailing list and aggressively added to it
without, it seems, ever pruning out non-purchasers. At one point around
1976, I received 19 catalogues in a single month from them.
