I too notice the loud pop when the check straps do their thing. If you
look at how they work, I think the noise is normal. I also seem to
recall a VW beetle doing the same thing.

Yes it occurs with my TR6 as well, but only on the
passenger door -
the driver's side door checkstrap doesn't work...
