I suspect that most of us with higher mileage vehicles have had these darn
things fall off or otherwise misbehave.  McMaster-Carr ( probably others )
(NFI) sells very nice ball joint rod ends, in many forms, that would appear
to be quite adaptable to this application.  They are probably lower
friction, definitely better engineered, and less likely to fail during high
speed pursuits, with the prerequisite throttle mashing, etc...  has anyone
tried this approach?

That's what prompted me to take action on this problem... only in my case
add that I was driving in the rain.... no top..... with just the Brooklands
Aero Screen between me & the weather.
