If I read your note correctly, that's exactly what he did.  Timing the
engine to 4 degrees atdc with the dist. vacuum hose connected fixed the
problem.  Prior to that, he'd tried it with the hose removed and plugged
and it ran rough.  Sorry I wasn't clearer.
