>Using a coil that requires a resistor without one will cause your points
to die quickly (less than 1000 miles), while the other combination will
just result in an engine that runs poorly, if at all. As long as the
resistor setup matches the coil, you should have no problems with early
coils and late engines, or vice versa.

I ran my 74 TR6 with a 12 volt coil for a couple of years with no problems
a-tall. That's not to say that cold weather starting didn't suffer or that
there were other conditions where the engine would have run better with the
right coil but it does suggest that the difference is more subtle.
