Phil, there's a guy who used to be on the list who did it right IMO. Jeff McNeal
has his conversion info at http://www.ohms.com/spitfire/radio.shtml#radio --
essentially, he had the original radio gutted and the internals replaced with a
new AM/FM radio with a plug for a CD-changer too. You can have it set up for
a wireless CD changer when it's rebuilt, but hold off on that till later if
you're on
a budget.

Anyway, it looks stock so there's little risk of theft, but it's really 
"modern".

it would be a good time to convert to negative ground anyway, and if you need
more juice you'll want to go to an alternator at some point for that huge
thumping speaker on the luggage rack.
