Sorry !  Guess I added a bunch to the confusion...

Yes I DID mean to say a 1/2" Whitworth wrench fits a bolt or screw of 1/2"
diameter, as opposed to one with a 1/2" head.  And of course Whitworth (and
BSF, BA, etc.) are standards.  And yes, BSW and BSF use different head sizes
for the same nominal diameter fasteners - in fact BSW/BSF wrenches (at least
mine) are actually marked with the different BSF and BSW sizes they fit, as
with the examples Randall, Graham, etc. gave.

What I meant by non-standard is what you often see in ANY thread system - an
unusually large or small head on a bolt or screw.  For instance, (referring to
US sizes here) you expect a 3/8" bolt to have a 9/16" head, but sometimes
(specialty fasteners, etc.) you find the head is larger or smaller and
requires a different wrench size.

OK - I'll shut up and go back to work  ;-)
