Does anyone know the proper way to hold the crank while turning?

I had read that when "Boss" Kettering saw a person severely injured by a hand
crank kick back, he started work on the electric starter.

I don't have a Brit car to hand crank, but do have a 1953 military spec Onan
generator with hand crank backup. The engine is a 56 CID 4 cylinder all
aluminum flathead made by Continental Engines ( not related to Ford/Lincoln )
