When replacing mine, I tried the hot water trick to no avail. Being a man of
little patience and a boiling pot far removed from the car, I ended up
cutting them at an angle. Making the slice at a 45 degree angle allows you
to insert the bushing easier. A squirt or two of Armor-All will lube it up
making it even easier. When the bushing is in and the rod is installed it
cannot go anywhere. Mine have been in now for 3000+ miles and no problems.
(I oriented the cut so that it is below the throttle rod upon installation.
You can barely detect the slice.)

Hope that is clear, it's tough to explain. Especially with a Maine accent.
