Thanks for the additional information! I have the same starting problems on
occasion with my TR3. You may have seen that I have been looking for a car
to replace my TR3. For the new car I had thought I might install the
high-torque starter but after hearing what you had to say I WILL install
one!

I run one of the high-Torque starter in my TR6.
It works great!  For two reasons:
First it spins fast and sure each time.
Second, I have a few bad spots on my ring gear.  With the old Lucas starter
there were times when the drive gear would hit one of the bad spots and not
engage.  I had to rock the car to move the ring gear and it would start.
With the High-Torque I have never had a problem.  Also it is less likely to
cause bad spots, because the drive gear doesn't begin to turn until it is
fully extended.  this puts it into contact with the ring gear before turning
rather than banging into it while spinning.
