You need a 6 terminal switch with 2 large and 4 small terminals

The two large terminals shut off the battery
2 small terminals shut off the alternator field
2 other small terminals ground the alternator output through a resistor to 
make sure the alt stops making power.

If a standard 2 terminal switch is used, the battery will be disconnected 
from the engine but the alternator will continue to make power allowing the 
engine to continue running.
