I have done two things to make checking/filling the tranny easier on
my TR4A:

1. Cut a hole in the transmission cover. This is mostly to make
filling easier - now I pull back the carpet, remove the rubber
plug, and have straight-on access to the plug. This is easy on the 4/4A,
where the cover is fibreboard (or ABS), and a little tougher on the
3 with a metal cover ... but well worth it.

2. Make a level checking tool out of a coat hanger. Mine has two
versions, one on each end, and which end I use depends on whether
I'm under the car or going from the passenger compartment: for the
former, the end of the wire has two 90 degree bends (forming a U)
where each leg is about 1/2" long. For the latter, just a single
90 degree bend. Either way, I can insert the end into the fill
hole and rest it on the bottom. Now I have a dipstick, and can
see how far below the hole the oil level is!

Best,
chris
