That brings up another point -

 - if the English were so magnanimous as to let the Scots and Welsh and
Irish (before Eire) call themselves British -

 - why don't citizens of the USA let other countries on this continent -
such as Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians etc etc - rightly call themselves
Americans?

 - of course it would require you to think of a name for your own country!
