A Shelby owner once said something to me along the
lines of: "Of the 1100 Cobras originally produced,
only 1500 remain."

I'm sure I have the numbers wrong, of course, but I
always thought that was amusing, and it points to the
fact that there are a lot of dubious "authentic"
classics around.

But didn't this string start off by discussing
"replicas" in terms of replicating factory specials
from standard cars? A GT350 from a stock Fastback,
for example? Or my particular project, which is a
"works replica" MGB? Clearly the new Ford GT is not a
replica any more than the new Beetle or new Mini are
replicas. It's just a new car that is specifically
designed to rekindle the romance of an original
classic. Some of these new cars are more faithful to
the originals than others, but they certainly aren't replicas.
