On a negative ground car.....

The ignition switch power ("+12v") goes to one terminal, and the coil +
goes
to the other. I dont remember which was which (spade input or spade
output).
You wont hurt anything if you have the two reversed, but the incorrect
connection
will not work.

|IGN SW|----------(tach)----------------[+coil
coil-]--------------<points>------- Chassis

In this way, the tach senses the closure and opening of the points
through an internal
inductive pickup.
