Terry,

I thought this was the FOT page.B I can't disagree on the number of donor
cars if you add midgets plus sprites.

However, when it comes to engines it is still how much reliability you want.B
As Hp goes up reliability goes down regardless of what you start with.B Look
at the Limited Prep Spits in H Production in SCCA.B Preparation is the key,
there is not a single part in my Spit engines that I do not at least massage
to get reliability.B

Suyspension:B the Spit front suspension is hard to beat, the spridget has
lever shocks or you pay to convert to what a Spit has as stock.B Rear
Suspension:B Solid rear axle vs Swing axle.B If you think a solid axle is
better, put in a super stiff rear spring in your Spit.B Don't forget that you
can have that spring made to give any rear camber you want.B Can you do that
with a midget rear axle ?B Personally, I prefer letting the suspension do its
work and I have a rear suspension that completely eliminates the jacking
forces plus the roll center does not move side to side in a corner.B Bottom
line is there are fewer Spits to start with but they have the advantage in
suspension and are equal in the cost of building a race engine and reliabilty
is whatever you want.B And don't forget tranys.

In short, it is less expensive to race a Spridget, and there are more "donor"
cars out there to support an effort.

The Sprite engine is more reliable as a race engine too.

B B Just got back from a weekend of vintage racing with the Corinthians
Vintage
B B Auto Racing group as the new track near Dallas (Eagle Canyon Raceway) and
B B one burning question popped into mind:

B B What's the ratio of Spitfires vs Austin Healey Sprite/MG Midgets in
vintage
B B racing?

B B In CVAR there's a gent named Roger Williams that originated a "Spec
Sprite"
B B class in CVAR, (basically a post 1970 Spriget bodyshell with barely warmed
B B over 1275 and a $35 Firestone spec tire) and directly built a bunch and
B B encouraged others to build more. B Those cars have bounced between FP and
B B Spec Sprite over the last 10 years depending upon owner's budget and
B B willingness to be honest. B So that may skew the numbers a tad.

B B This weekend there were roughly 12 Spridgets (8 FP and 4 Spec Sprite)..
And
B B only 1 Spitfire in FP. B In 15 years I've only ever seen 4 different
B B Spitfires (3 round tail and 1 squaretail "Mk IV" ;) and never witnessed
more
B B than one Spitfire running at a time.

B B On the flip side, if I counted cars using Spitfire (ok, Herald) based
front
B B suspensions the ratio gets turned over, when you condider the Loti, FF,
and
B B token TVRs that show up from time to time.

B B Back to the subject line, is it purely the rear swing axle/diff issue?

B B Cheers,

B B Jim
