Dusty,

I do the same as you. Engage on the throttle and disengage coasting. Been doing 
it that way without any problems for many miles. Plus I love the surge when 
that sucker kicks in.

My Laycock de Normanville service manual says the Three Speed Unit was designed 
to provide instantaneous gear changes. Using the clutch defeats that design 
intention IMHO.
