I'm sure you hit it right on the head there. I
know I'm one of those "ole guys". I havn't been
to Bonneville yet, and it will still be a year or
two before I can go, but my first trip to Maxton
earlier this year was a flashback of the first
magnitude. My first "official" drag race was in
late 1958. I drove to an old, abandoned Army air
field (Valkeria, Fl), found a parking space off
to one side (pits),popped off the hubcaps and air
cleaners, and commenced to race. No lights - a
guy with a flag! There was not a single
18-wheeler in sight. No cars had sponsor decals.
Only one guy had slicks. No trailers. Three of
the "real race cars" were towed in with tow bars.
There were only about three or four "spectators"
but I suspect that's because their cars were
"down" that weekend. The object was to go as fast
as you could (not as close as you could to a
pre-selected speed) and do it quicker than the
guy next to you. Last guy left standing was the
winner! Everybody shared secrets and helped each
other. I somehow got an air bubble in my brakes,
and the guy pitted next to me tossed me a can of
brake fluid. Sound like LSR these days? I pulled
into an old Army air field at Maxton, found a
spot next to the track, unloaded, taped up the
grille, and went racing. No lights - a guy with
a flag. No 18 wheelers. I think the only
spectators there were just drivers without cars!
My tires were the wrong size so I set a record on
tires borrowed from the guy pitted next to me!
Whoever it was that said: "You can never go
back." just don't know nuthin'!

I love it.
