I agree that trans gearing does matter on a lot of cars. As you pointed out a 
slow car such as that production Crosley with the flames that ran 77mph could 
have been pushed to 50 mph in high and ran the same speed. Jack's car with my 
Nissan picked up 5mph between average speed in the last mile and exit speed. 
He really needed a trans, but had high gear only at that time,  Rich
