Ouch!!!!! Yeah, I have been through the manual control thing with a road racer.
More than once I "forgot" to timely turn on the fan, but I always caught it
before anything disastrous happened (at least it had airflow through the 
radiator
when moving). He must have had a pretty long wait on the line to burn
down........Personally, I don't like to put a lot of heat in the motor before a
run.
