XO vs. XF

Hi All,
Not to inflame old wounds etc. ;-) but how come the speeds are a good
bit higher for the XO class cars (vintage or not) than the XF ones?
Which common engines go head to head and what are some basic diferences?

Sorry if this is old stuff to the list; is there a thread etc. in
archives?
