Keith,

   After considering the virtues of lubricants and belt drives I've struck
upon a simple idea that may work for your machine.  How about running water
over the gears??  This would continuously flush away dirt and grit while
providing some cooling.
Worried about the water bill?  How about a simple pump system that
recirculates the same water in a tank, allowing the silt to settle out
before the water is pumped out again.  Add some fake rock waterfalls and you
can call it landscaping!
