This seems like a good time for me to ask a dumb question that I've wondered
about since first reading the SCTA rule book--
What is the rationale behind requiring a car to be towed back on the return
road? It seems like cars with an on- board starter, good driver visibility,
and a fully functional cooling system could be safely driven back down the
return road after a run and this would speed up the time between runs and
save wear & tear on the salt.
I realize that not all cars could do this safely, without overheating, or
having a low enough gear to keep the return road speed down. If a driver had
a radio to check in after a run and assure his crew of his safety and the
car's condition, couldn't he simply drive back to the pit area?
This may be a naive question-- there are probably good reasons for that rule
but I'd like to know why it was instituted.

I think the tow bar is the best solution. Adding a safety chain is a good
idea. It's not fun to ride in the sun on a 100 degree day in a car that is
bumping along at 20 or so MPH. I use a dolley but then I wonder how a
towbar would work in my case......
