We had moved to North Carolina to stay with my dad's family and remember my
mother saying that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. I was 6 and my brother 8
at the time. Dad was in Northern Ireland at the time. I remember the scrap
drives, the paper drives, the blacked out windows, the air raid sirens and
the little eye lids put on the cars headlights. There were lead pennys and
ration coupons for gas. Oh, there were search lights nightly.

I remember that everyone wanted to go to fight for the country. I just wated
to older so I could go.I think because of the radio and a weekly newspapaer
we were a lot more aware at that young age then the kids today. The
population was a lot smaller and families much closer and we cared for the
country. After the war dad came home and we moved back to Calif. He
completed 40 years with the Navy and spent 10 more years at Hughes Aircraft
in security on the famous flying boat.
His weekly trip was to see the news reels to keep up on the world affairs,
we always went with him until we were older. My brother went in the Navy and
I in the Army. We were proud to be part of it. Yes we remember and will
never forget. My dads best friend was on the Arizona.
