An FIA rep told me that they were required to verify that there were four
uninterrupted tire tracks on the ground for the entire timed part of the
course.

Photographs of the track surface after a supersonic run show wheel tracks
in the churned up dirt. This make me think that the damage was done to the 
surface by the sonic shock wave.
