Anything in the air stream such as a wing or canard creates a lot of drag.
Unlike the top fuel dragsters, lakesters run a small and lower mounted wing.
Ground effects are another story and work great going in a straight line.
When they get a little sideways the loss of suction is quick and usually the
begining of a bad ride. Lots of varables in this business.
