If you ran separate idler pulleys, it seems like you wouldn't need to
have exactly the same dimension belts. I haven't tried this but it seems
logical-- maybe someone else has tried individual idlers?

Aron, your choice of cog belt is a wise decision. Back in the 60/70's
we used v belts, 2 or 3 at a time to run blowers. The challenge was
finding belts that were of identical dimensions. More trouble than you
can imagine. 
  I didn't see a reference to vintage transmission either.
